We are all unique in the way we walk with God. Our conversations with Him reflect that individuality, right down to the way we speak. We each communicate in our own voice, using our own vocabulary. And He delights in our heartfelt, honest worship and praise. After all, it's by His design, for His pleasure and enjoyment, that He created us to be in fellowship with Him.
It was through this realization, discovered in my mother's journals, that this song came into existence. Her distinctive choice of words, the way she expressed her recollections and prayers, seemed to leap off the pages and into my creative consciousness.
As I began playing with her phrasing and grammatical choices, melodies started finding their rhythms and intervals. Before long, I was sharing them in worship and humbly discovering the blessings within their meditative nature.
By every measure, it's a blessing that she chose to write down her daily thoughts, feelings, and prayers.
Over the past year, I've begun a journey through those journals, one day at a time. The treasures I've unearthed have exceeded anything I might have imagined. This particular piece of poetry was the first to emerge from that process, and it holds a special place in my heart.
It's not necessarily the thoughts themselves, but the way they're expressed. I may feel the very same things, but I would never have shared them using these particular words, arranged in this particular way. That's the beauty of our individuality.
Musically, the inspiration came from the words themselves. They seemed to sing to me almost immediately, without much of a struggle. I had only the skeleton of an arrangement and an ever-changing bed of harmonies when I brought the song into the studio. In that sense, it was much like the live offering—always a work in progress.
This recording is a snapshot of one particular moment in that journey, a reflection of where the song happened to be when the music was captured.
My prayer is that the Spirit's presence, so alive in its creation, will be just as present in your listening.
